Actors needed for Student Film, Cape Town

Men and women 20 - 65 Years old, Western Cape

A group of final year film production students at City Varsity, School of Media and Creative Arts are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated actors to star in a student film titled Toska.

The film’s estimated running time is approximately between 24 minutes to 30 minutes.

The duration of filming for Toska for a week from the 17th till the 22nd of May 2016 and the student are looking to cast their characters as soon as possible.

Synopsis:A legal thriller set at the forefront of a medical breakthrough. The innovation of partial brain transplants changes the life of Katherine Fourie, an esteemed lawyer vying for a promotion into South Africa’s High Court. While Katherine is involved in a case against a medical centre, she gets into an accident and must deal with unethical practices and a conflict of interest as she is admitted to the very centre she is trying to bring down.

Dr. Raymond Campbell
Sex: Male
Age range: 50 – 60
Ethnicity: White.
Personality & Background: Raymond Campbell is a very ambitious and highly successful Neurosurgen and widower. His progress in his work is a result of his wife sustaining fatal brain trauma. Ever since, Dr. Campbell has been working to save others from the same fate. Through secretly unethical practices, he has managed to become one of very few in the world who are able to perform brain transplants. Obsessed by progress and doing for others what he couldn’t do for his wife, Dr. Campbell resorts to cutting corners and euthanizing “terminally ill” patients at De Jager Medical Centre in order to maintain his supply of brain donors and ensure successful transplants. He holds himself to a highly professional standard and speaks clearly, but sometimes condescendingly to others as he is a very important and value figure at the medical centre.

Katherine Fourie
Sex: Female

Age Range: 25 – 30
Katherine grew up in as a foster child in a family of lawyers. She herself grew up into a becoming lawyer as her profession. As her foster parents adopted her at an older age of 10, she always felt as though she wasn’t ever really a part of the family. By becoming a successful lawyer and making it to the top is her way to feeling closer to the family. This is what motivates her goal to gain a promotion to being a lawyer for the high court. Katherine gives off a strong, powerful and slightly ruthless exterior, but has a soft side and a big heart that pushes her to fight for justice. Katherine is involved in a case that could be her ticket to a promotion; however it seems to be a losing battle against De Jager Medical Centre, a wealthy medical conglomerate. After an accident in which she sustains brain trauma, she is admitted to the centre for surgery and starts to witness the atrocities taking place there.

Darryn King
Sex: Male
Ethnicity: Black/Coloured
Age Range: 25 - 30
He works as a lawyer and rival to Katherine, very good at dealing with his external environment, whether it is fighting cases or charming the ladies. He fears nothing or anything anyone might throw at him. However, he also doesn’t really welcome unwanted intrusions. He will do just about anything to close a case in his favour. He might even resort to immoral acts to get what he wants. He utterly despises losing, especially to Katherine as she is also a contender for the High Court promotion. He uses his good looks and charm to get through any situation, which allows him to develop a huge social ego and snarky attitude towards those he believes are beneath him.

Thane De Jager
Sex: Male
Ethnicity: White
Age Range: 25 - 40
He grew up with an abundance of money and thus had life handed to him on a silver platter. His wealth allows him to buy his way out or into any situation, making him untouchable. Thane comes a across as quite a ‘dick’ as some would say. Like Darryn, Thane has a huge ego because of his wealth and looks which makes him feel as though he could never lose. He uses his charms and money to persuade people to do whatever he wants. He owns and funds De Jager Medical Centre, where Dr. Campbell’s Neuro-scientific research on brain repair has been taking place. In the De Jager Medical Centre court case, Thane hides all the evidence with his money, which emphasises his confidence in winning the case and fuels his arrogant attitude.

Jane Louw
Sex: Female
Ethnicity: No restrictions
Age range: 25 -30
Jane is Katherine's socially inept assistant and office manager who always means well, but receives little respect and is looked down upon. Her loyalty borders beyond that of an average assistant as she completely admires Katherine and what she does, making Jane a bit of a suck-up. Despite a lack of respect, she’s bubbly, tenacious and tough. She always fights for what she believes in and likes to create a positive office environment. Brimming with enthusiasm, Jane always wants to help.

Nurse
Sex: Female
Ethnicity: No limitations
Age Range: 25 – 30
She is kind, pleasant and diligent nurse spends time making sure that Katherine recovers well during her admission to De Jager Medical Centre, however she is cahoots with Dr. Campbell and her loyalty to the patients of the centre is outweighed by her loyalty to him and his scientific needs. She is willing to help him euthanize patients and harvest their brains if need be and can turn from benevolent to malevolent in the blink of an eye.

Taylor Burgess
Sex: Female
Ethnicity: No limitations
Age Range: 20 -25
Taylor is a patient kept at De Jager Medical Centre against her will for Dr. Campbell to conduct his experiments on. She refuses to be just a test subject, and bides her time trying to help others whose lives are in danger at the centre and finding incriminating evidence against the centre.

Ida Meyer
Sex: Female
Ethnicity: Black/Coloured
Age Range: 20 - 25
Ida is Katherine’s client and the plaintiff in the De Jager Medical Centre case who is fighting to get closure and justice for her brother who died as a patient of the centre. She is a strong but fragile woman who really had no one in her life but him.

Judge Du Plooy
Sex: Female
Ethnicity: White/Coloured
Age Range: 30 - 45
Judge Du Plooy is a strong, no nonsense, zero tolerance judge in terms of her attitude and standpoint who is a part of the De Jager Medical Centre Case.

Toska is also in need of some extras for the courtroom and hospital scenes.

Note:
Toska is a production with a very limited budget as they are students. Therefore they will not be able to financially remunerate our selected cast. However, they can cover the costs of food and travel for actors, a copy of the finished film, and some behind the scenes stills. The film may be entered in various film festivals and will also have a screening at City Varsity.
