Artscape Theatre Centre is calling for auditions for the 2017 New Voices Programme to be held from the 10th to 13th July 2017 at Artscape.

The New Voices Programme seeks to give voice to new theatre makers, directors, choreographers, scriptwriters and creative expression. It seeks to restore the dignity and confidence of artists of multiple creative expression. Moreover it seeks to excavate the buried stories in order to reclaim their identity in the mainstream. This year’s programme consists of four productions, Imbewu: The Seed, Once Upon a Nation, Night & Day and So-Called.

So-Called: To be staged from 16 to 21 October 2017

"So-Called" follows the stories of three self-identifying coloured women as they attempt to unpack issues of coloured femaleness. Finding themselves in South Africa's great citadel of Whiteness, Cape Town, three "so-called coloured" women begin to unravel the doek that is Colouredness.

Artscape is seeking two coloured female actors between ages of 20 and 30. Preferably with theatre or performance training.

Actors auditioning will be required to participate in a workshop which will comprise of a warm-up, ice breakers, facilitated sharing of personal stories (that pertain to coloured heritage/growing up coloured) and presentation of a prepared monologue (the text which will be provided to successful applicants). They also need to be available from 25 September to 21 October 2017.

The New Voices Programme is an integral part of Artscape mission as an inclusive cultural centre for all, showcasing all arts genres and seeking to develop and give platforms to narratives, aesthetics and language that have been, and still are, marginalized in creative industries.
